Oasis of Hope is a non-profit, community-based Christian
organization that encourages life-on-life relationships that connect
people across racial and socioeconomic boundaries. Our mission is to
demonstrate Christ’s love to an under-resourced community in Memphis by
elevating and improving the quality of neighborhood life through
empowerment and partnerships.

Soon you'll be hunting down your school's long list of
supply items needed for your child to return to school. Would you
consider picking up items and filling a backpack for an inner city child
as well? This is a HUGE need and many kids cannot afford the items
requested by their schools. Join us in loving on the kids of North
Memphis in this very practical way! Click here to view
school supply lists for different grade levels or uniform details.
Oasis of Hope hosts the Manassas High School
football team to come to a
three-day camp based out of Hope Presbyterian Church. Our volunteers
then have the incredible chance to not only improve the boys' physical
game play, but more importantly their spiritual game. Bible studies,
prayer and one-on-one attention are interspersed into their athletic
training. It's an awesome platform that allows our volunteers to provide
positive role models, Biblical instruction, teamwork, and the guy-time
they've been missing in their lives. Please volunteer your time or
sponsor a football player for $50 today (and then come and cheer
them on
during a game)! Follow the team by reading more on our Manassas Football
page. For more information, contact
us.
Caldwell Elementary school building
has a new tenant and we have a new neighborhood partner - KIPP Academy!
We are very excited to have started this new relationship off on the
right foot thanks to the MANY volunteers who helped us re-paint the old
Caldwell school! There are multiple football field lengths of hallways
in the school and volunteers not only painted those but several
bathrooms as well! We are thrilled to have been able to offer such
tangible help and look forward to working with the students this Fall!
Want to have a great summer party with
a purpose? Want to have an awesome Christian concert…at your HOUSE?
House Concerts by Jill Dyson, with Matt Tutor, are bringing an intimate
evening
of fellowship and music to you. Here you may connect with friends and
family and enjoy an entertaining night of God’s Word through a variety
of
original songs. Most concerts will take place from around 6:30pm to
8:00pm. In lieu of a ticket price, a love offering will be accepted and
merchandise will be sold. Jill’s SweeT-shirt ministry collaborates with
Oasis of Hope and ministers with our young women through the production
of all shirts
made and sold during these events. Questions or to reserve your concert
date click here for more information or email Jill
Dyson,

Recently a group of volunteers helped plant produce in our
NEW community garden (corner of 7th
and T.M. Henderson). Green Urban Growers and Hope Presbyterian Church
have partnered with Ms. Marry Jones (who lives in the community) to
plant an urban garden that will provide
healthy food for residents in inner city North Memphis. We will be
maintaining the garden the 1st and 3rd Thursdays from 5-630pm. We'd love to
have you join us! No gardening experience is necessary and kids are
welcome as well! If you're interested or would like more information,
please call Karen at 921-8350.
June 1st Update: Oasis is glad to report that we have received a
Federal
Neighborhood Stabilization Program grant to bring additional affordable
housing
to our neighborhood in North Memphis! We were awarded a $300,000 grant
to
rehab homes in the neighborhood and the process has begun. We
have identified and are purchasing our first five homes in the community. We have also purchased an apartment complex adjacent to Bearwater Park that will continue that development all the way from 3rd to 7th Street. We hope for
construction to begin on the homes in July. Please consider
volunteering some time to the project once it begins. Typical volunteer
assistance includes painting, landscaping, light carpentry and
clean-up.
It may even be a part of our Hope House projects. Keep
checking
here for the latest information.
June 1st Update: We have good news to report! Our new subdivision
plan has been approved by
Memphis' Office of Planning & Development (see diagram). We are
anxiously awaiting the demolition of
the current apartment buildings by Code Enforcement this summer. The initial phase is scheduled to begin this
fall (10 housing units). We anticipate
the entire development to cost just over $5 million with our
responsibility to
raise approximately $500,000 in gap funding to accomplish this major
goal. The development will bring quality housing at
very affordable rents to low-income families in our community, which is a
dire
need. You can help be a part of the
solution to this problem. If you would
like to give to this outreach, you can donate
online
or write checks to Oasis of Hope, Inc. and put
Bearwater Park in the memo. Click here
or click the graphic to the left to view the blueprints for the
property! For ongoing details on this project view the Bearwater
Park web page.
