LaWanda HillRigorously training through the national organization, New Leaders for New School to become the new principal of Caldwell Elementary was no easy feat. But anything worthwhile never comes easy. That in itself is the story of the students that I serve. Both those that come from less than desirable situations and those whose situations are adequate have a difficult road ahead of them living in today’s world. However, with the belief that all children can learn and achieve at high levels, I know that nothing is impossible. Every child that walks in the building is a representation of my own meager beginnings and I walk in there everyday to ensure that they realize everything that’s great about this world like the love and quality education that I’ve experienced and much more. Elementary education is foundational and provides memories for most of us whether positive or negative. The opportunity to be a part of the formative years of future doctors, lawyers, teachers, preachers or whatever our students desire is an awesome experience. I’ve encouraged the entire faculty and staff of Caldwell to believe in Every Child, Every Day, to support Every Child, Every Day, to encourage Every Child, Every Day and to provide opportunities for growth for Every Child, Every Day. With this approach to education it is almost impossible to miss the mark of success with our students. Immediately following my appointment to Caldwell it was very evident that there was a lot of technical work to be done. The building which houses not only Caldwell Elementary students but those of Memphis Academy of Health Sciences and those of Perea Pre School needed a lot of attention. To prepare for the entrance of almost 1000 students my focal point was on providing a safe and nurturing environment for learning. With Memphis City Schools new Blue Ribbon Initiative we adopted an approach of emphasizing positive behavior with our three week Caldwell Cougar Institute. During this time students have been taught to GROWL like Caldwell Cougars not because we’re vicious but because we are serious about education. We Govern ourselves accordingly, Respect ourselves and others, Own our behavior, have a Winning attitude, and Lead by example. These very attributes that we teach our students exemplify the love and support that we get from Hope Presbyterian Church and their ministry, Oasis of Hope. Their Adopt-A-Class program provides a unique partnership that is probably the only one in Memphis that provides a staff member to the school to coordinate volunteer efforts on such a dedicated level. The support is awesome! HOPE has a prospective perspective. They are forward looking realizing that these kids are the same as the kids everywhere, they need love and guidance. This coupled with quality education will help the students of Caldwell Elementary to become productive citizens who will be leaders in education, economics, social justice, and live happy, healthy and whole lives.
